Organization Profile: COMIXMUL, The Co-op Mixta Mujeres Unidas Limitada, initiated operations in 1986 as a solidarity project between 12 women who sold fruit, vegetables and food at the San Pablo market located in the small city of Siguatepeque in Honduras. COMIXMUL became legally registered as a co-op by the Honduran National Registry of Cooperatives in August of 1991 and in addition to credit and savings services, COMIXMUL also offers an innovative healthcare program geared towards women’s health as 100% of the co-op’s members are female.
COMIXMUL’s holistic approach focuses not only on co-op development, micro-entrepreneurship and financial management, but also social and economic development, women’s empowerment and education initiatives related to health and hygiene, child delivery, HIV/AIDS, first aid, nutrition and natural medicine.
COMIXMUL is a member of the Federation of Honduran Cooperatives of Credit and Savings (FACACH) and is compromised of 80 credit unions, 22 of which will be under the guidance of the National Commission of Bank and Insurance (CNBS) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB).
The Co-op’s branches are distributed geographically across the northwestern and southwestern regions of Honduras, with branches located in the departments of Comayagua, Intibucá, Copán, Santa Bárbara, La Esperanza, Valle, and Choluteca. Its main office is situated in Siguatepeque (in the department of Comayagua) with other offices located in both urban and rural regions so as to extend their service to more women living on the Pacific Ocean side of the country—COMIXMUL is the largest and most prestigious Honduran credit union providing credit and savings catered to women.

Borrowers: COMIXMUL issued loans to 11,828 borrowers. Of these borrowers, 100% are women (as of 2011).
Lending Portfolio: COMIXMUL’s total lending portfolio is $18,121,364 with an average loan size of $1,532. Of this portfolio, 18% is allocated towards housing, 9% towards livestock and agriculture, 7% towards services, 2% towards commerce, small enterprise, and industry and 1% towards consumption (as of 2011).
